Are there really such thing call "Platonic Friendship?"

For some of you who don't know what platonic friendship is... It is having two gender... one male and one female who share the common border of not developing relationship for either one...
Is it possible? Nt having developed feelings for another sex unless your not STRAIGHT...
If its possible, so tell me how do friends become couples, couples become matriarchal...
